She was scarred and unsightly but her worst scars ran deeper than the eye could see, they were internal. She lived with deep emotional wounds. Even though, she is nameless and faceless, Luke recorded her narrative in his gospel (Luke 7:36-50). Rejection had been her lot in life and her only claim to fame was her reputation among the town people as a notorious sinner. Although the town people ridiculed her and whispered to one another when she passed by nobody knew or cared to know her real need.

Healing for a Wounded Spirit

The first and most important step to healing of a wounded spirit is forgiveness. If we don’t forgive bitterness will saturate us with poison and eventually destroy us. By holding on to it, we continue to give the offense and the offender power over us. I was a grown woman with children of my own before I realized that what my grandfather did to me was against the law. It was something I never talked about to my parents, siblings or friends. It was something that was buried so deeply within me that I never mentioned it.

All of us "grown up" children live with any number of ghosts from our pasts which still rear their ugly heads and haunt us from time to time. I can still recall unkind (even rude) comments made by adults in my life, which made me very self conscience about my voice. These comments lead to feelings of inferiority which had an impact on my life for years to come. One afternoon when I was a young teenager I was singing around the house and my mother said to me: "I feel embarrassed for you when you try to sing.

Hurting??? You are not alone...

Society discards broken vessels but God restores and renews them. There is hope and healing at the foot of the cross.
