Humpty Dumpty Syndrome

One minute he was safe and secure on top of the wall, now he lay shattered on the ground beneath. All the King's men and all the King's horses were beckoned to the scene of the tragedy, but to no avail. Try as they may, they could do nothing for Humpty Dumpty, he was totally hopeless! This nursery rhyme characterizes the plight of numerous children of God. One minute they seem to be safe and secure on top of the wall of their life, but through a series of wrong choices, each slightly easier to make than the one before, they find themselves lying in shambles at the bottom. Like Humpty Dumpty, they are broken and feel totally hopeless and alone. The Bible is replete with accounts of men and women who found their lives in shambles as a repercussion of their own failure. I call it the "Humpty Dumpty syndrome".Although Peter knew first hand what it was to walk the dusty roads of Galilee beside Jesus, he suffered with the Humpty Dumpty syndrome. Forsaking all, he had laid down his fishing nets in response to the Master's call, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." His intimate relationship, with the man from Nazareth, afforded him an eye witness account of miracle after miracle. He had been present on the Mount of Transfiguration, seeing with his own eyes the brilliant cloud, hearing with his own ears the voice of God declaring, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him." (Matt. 17:5) Impetuous as he was, Peter had a rare glimpse, deep into the heart of God's own Son, that few mortals would ever experience. Yet we don't have to look far into the gospel accounts to realize, Peter, too, had feet of clay. In Matt. 26 Jesus foretold Peter's denial. In response to the Master, impulsive Peter said: " Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you." The he went a step further, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never desert you." ." (Matt 26:35 NLT) However, Peter, who had pledged his allegiance to Christ even to the point of death, found his backbone crumbling when a servant girl identified him as a follower of the man destined for Calvary. Not just once, but three times, on that fateful evening Peter fervently denied his Lord. Yet, the crowing of a lonely rooster did not mark the end of Peter's ministry! During his silent cry in the darkness, he called upon the blood that was to be shed by the man he had just denied. After the crucifixion, broken, defeated, guilt-ridden, hopeless, Peter headed back to his fishing boat. His walk with Christ had ended in failure of his own doing. So, he decided to go back to his old way of life. After toiling all night, his net was still empty. Evidently he was a failure at everything. Suddenly, just as the sun was peeking over the horizon, he heard a familiar voice calling from the shore: "Children, have you any fish?" "No!" came the dismal reply. "We're nothing but failures, no matter how you slice it!" Jesus words resounded across the water, "Cast your net in again Peter." In obedience he did and this time the nets were full to overflowing. Later, on the banks of Galilee He had a face to face encounter with Jesus. Three times Christ questioned him "Peter, lovest thou me?" (John 15:21 KJV). Three times Peter reaffirm his love and commitment to the savior, one time for every denial. And three times Jesus reassured Peter that the gifts and callings of God are without repentance, when He admonished him "Feed my sheep."The Prodigal Son is another example of one who suffered from the Humpty Dumpty syndrome. This young man decided life would be better if it could be lived his way. He took his share of the family inheritance and headed for a far off country. He lived it up for a while. and wasted his money in wild living. He had the world by the tail, he was definitely setting smugly on top of the wall... looking down at everybody else! But the day came when his pockets were empty, his personal stock market crashed..... he tumbled off the wall, and lay in a broken, mangled heap.... his entire life in shambles. After much desperate contemplation, the Bible says: "He came to his senses” ( Luke 15:17 NLT) and decided to go home! Notice he didn't have to clean up before he could go home. He got up from the filthy pig pen and went just like he was. Once home, he discovered his loving, anxious father welcomed him with open arms. The cities of America are full of spiritual prodigals, who once knew the shelter of the fold. Some drawn away by bright lights and promises of contentment elsewhere, deliberately departed for a far off country. Others made a series of wrong choices, each one slightly easier to make than the one before, found themselves estranged from God. Before they realized what was happening, they tumbled off the wall. When they came to themselves, they were lying in the pig pen of sin, broken, hopeless and all alone. Many such prodigals long to go home but they fear they cannot. They fear their sin is too great, they would not be welcome. They doubt they are worthy of the Father's forgiveness. Likewise, some fear the rejection and scorn of the "elder brother". Maybe you can relate to Peter, to the prodigal son, even to Humpty Dumpty. Maybe you've blown it! Maybe you've failed the Lord BIG time! Maybe you are broken, defeated, guilt-ridden and hopeless, but the Master calls to you: "Cast your net in again!" Don't lay there in defeat, get up and come home!It is true that all the King's men and all the King's horses can never put you together again. But The KING Himself will pick up the broken pieces of your life and put them back together again! When He does you'll be better than you were before. God uses broken vessels, the world casts them aside on the rubbish heap, but God restores them, makes them into something beautiful and uses them for His Glory! If you have been broken by sin, there is hope! Allow The KING to pick up the broken pieces, cleanse them by His blood, and lovingly put them back together again. No matter where you have been or what you have done, your Heavenly Father loves you so much, He will cause a sweet anointing to flow from your brokenness and use you again. Just like He did Peter. After Peter's failure God used him in a way that might have never been possible if Peter had not come to grips with how weak his flesh really was. There is a verse in Micah 7:8 that says, "Do not rejoice over me, oh my enemy; When I fall, I will arise...."In other words: "Yeah, I blew it, I fell flat on my face, I'm laying here with my life in shambles.... but don't get your hopes up, old boy.... I shall arise and when I do you better look out!"

Cleveland recommends that you leave the tie pins at home. A handkerchief is “okay”, but “stay away from the tie and handkerchief combination packages,” he advises. A white silk or coordinating handkerchief is fine.
